Write your NFC chips and customize your QR

Tap & Scan gives you one link that lives on your physical chips and inside your QR code. This article walks you through writing that link onto your NFC chips, styling and downloading your QR code, and telling Churchday your average attendance so it can show taps as a percentage.

Before you begin

  • You need access to the Tap & Scan tab.
  • To write chips you'll need blank NFC tags and a phone with NFC (most modern iPhones and Android phones have it).

Open your Tap & Scan settings

  1. Go to the Tap & Scan page from your dashboard.
  2. Click the gear icon in the top-right corner (it's labeled Tap & Scan settings). The page reads "Write your chips, and set how taps are measured."

Write your chips

The same link goes on every chip and into your QR code. It never changes, even when you switch where it points, so you can program a whole stack of chips at once.

  1. Copy the link. In the Write your chips section, click Copy next to the field labeled Link to write on your chips.
  2. Get a free NFC writing app. The app suggests NFC Tools, which works on both iPhone and Android.
  3. Choose Write, then Add a record, then Link/URL inside the app.
  4. Paste the link you copied, then hold a chip to your phone to write it.
  5. Repeat for the rest of your stack. Because every chip carries the same link, you can move through a pile quickly.
  6. Optional: lock each chip. Most NFC apps have a lock option that prevents the link from being changed later.

Good to know about chips

  • Sticking a chip on metal? Use NFC tags labeled "on-metal." They have a shielding layer; ordinary tags won't read reliably on a metal surface.
  • Locking a chip is permanent, so only lock it once you've confirmed the link is correct.

Customize and download your QR code

Your QR code carries the same link as your chips. You style and download it from the main Tap & Scan page.

  1. Go back to the Tap & Scan page.
  2. Click the QR thumbnail at the top (it's labeled Customize and download QR code). A pop-up window titled "Customize your QR code" opens.
  3. Pick a Style, a Logo for the center, and a Background using the options provided. The preview updates as you go.
  4. Scan the preview with your phone before printing a batch, especially if you added a logo or colored background.
  5. Choose your format and size, then click Download. You can save a PNG or an SVG.
  6. Click Save if you want Churchday to remember this design.

Set how taps are measured

Under Room & attendance, the Average attendance field lets Churchday show taps as a percentage of your room instead of a plain count.

  1. Type your average attendance (an estimate is fine, for example 250).
  2. Press Enter or click away to save.
  3. Leave it blank if you'd rather just see raw tap counts.
