Adding Icons to Groups and Teams

An icon gives each group, team, or role a small visual marker so your staff can spot it instantly in lists and on member profiles. You can pick an emoji or upload your own image.

Before you begin

  • You need permission to manage tags, groups, and teams (church admins have this).
  • Icons apply to groups, teams, and the roles inside a team. Simple tags do not have icons.

Step-by-step

  1. Go to the People section. In the dashboard, open People, then click the Groups or Teams tab. To give a role an icon, open a team first and add or edit a role there.
  2. Open the create or edit window. Click to create a new group, team, or role, or open an existing one to edit it. You'll see an Icon & Name field with a small square icon button to the left of the name box.
  3. Click the square icon button. A pop-up window opens with two tabs: Emoji and Upload.
  4. Pick an emoji, or upload an image.
    • On the Emoji tab, type in the Search emoji box to find one, or scroll the list. A curated Faith & Spiritual set (church, cross, dove, and more) appears first, followed by the full emoji list grouped by category. Click any emoji to apply it.
    • On the Upload tab, click Click to upload and choose an image from your computer. The window accepts PNG, JPG, SVG up to 2MB.
  5. Save your changes. Click Create (for a new item) or Save changes (when editing). The icon now appears next to the name everywhere that group, team, or role is shown.

Good to know

  • You don't have to choose one. If you skip the icon, Churchday fills one in for you. New teams and roles start with a random emoji already in place, and groups get an emoji based on their name (the same name always gets the same emoji). You can change it any time by editing the item.
  • Tags stay plain text. Simple tags never have an icon. The picker only appears for groups, teams, and roles, so tags always show as a plain text label.
  • There's no color picker. Unlike older versions, you no longer choose a color. Each group, team, and role uses one fixed background color that Churchday sets for you, so the only choice you make here is the icon.
  • The small dot placeholder. If an item ever has no icon at all, it shows a small colored dot in the icon's place. Because groups and teams always get an icon automatically, you'll rarely see this.
  • Where icons show up. Your chosen icon appears in the group, team, and role lists, on member profiles, and on the group and team pages your members see.
