Creating Groups and Setting Visibility
Groups are the communities people belong to at your church, like a Tuesday Bible study or a young adults fellowship. When you create a group, you also choose whether it shows on your public page and how people get in.
Before you begin
- You need admin or staff access to your church dashboard.
- Decide whether the group is something members should be able to find on their own, or something you keep internal.
Step-by-step
- Go to the People page. In the dashboard, open People, then click the Groups tab.
- Click New group. A pop-up window titled New group opens.
- Set the icon and name. Under Icon & Name, click the square on the left to pick an icon, then type the group's name in the box next to it (for example, "Tuesday Bible Study").
- Add a description (optional). In the Description box, write a short line about what the group does. You can leave this blank.
- Choose the visibility. Under Visibility, pick one:
- Public shows the group on your public page, so members can find and join it themselves.
- Private hides the group from your public page. You add members yourself or share an invite link.
- Choose who can join (public groups only). If you picked Public, a Who can join? section appears:
- Anyone can join lets members join instantly with one click.
- Admin approval means members request to join, and you approve or reject each request.
- Click Create group. The group is created and you land on its page, ready to add people.
Good to know
- The defaults are Public and Admin approval. New groups start public with approval required, so nobody joins without your okay. Change either setting before you click Create group.
- A one-time notice may appear at the top of the Groups tab. It explains that groups you already had were set to Public. Click into any group to switch it to Private if it should stay internal.
- Approve or reject join requests from the group's page. A public group set to Admin approval shows a Pending requests panel on its page, oldest request first, with Approve and Reject buttons for each person.
- Private groups have a Share link button. Open a private group and click Share link to copy an invite link you can send directly to the people you want in the group.
- Subgroups are always internal. These visibility and join settings apply to top-level groups. A group nested inside another group stays private and doesn't show publicly.
