Are Nested Groups and Subteams Available?

Short answer: not right now. You cannot place one group inside another group, or a role team inside another team, in Churchday today. This article explains what that means and how to keep your people organized without nesting.

The short answer

When you create or edit a group or team, there is no option to choose a "parent." Every group and every team sits at the top level, side by side. The same is true for tags. There is no way to build a folder-style hierarchy where one group lives underneath another.

This is a deliberate choice for the current version of the product. The nesting feature is switched off across the app, so you will not find a parent field, a "Subgroups" section, or an "Add subgroup" button anywhere in your dashboard.

Older help may not match

You might come across an older article or note that describes nesting, including a step like "edit the group and choose a parent from the dropdown." That instruction does not match the current product. There is no such dropdown today, so please disregard those steps. This article reflects how Churchday actually works right now.

How to organize without nesting

You can still keep a large ministry tidy. Here are the two approaches that work today.

Use clear naming. Give related groups names that sort together and read as a family, for example:

"Home Group, North Side"
"Home Group, South Side"
"Home Group, Campus"

Because groups are listed alphabetically, matching names line up next to each other, which reads almost like a nested list.

Use one broad tag plus separate groups. Create a single tag such as "Home Groups" and apply it to everyone in any home group. Then keep each home group as its own separate group for the day-to-day roster. The tag lets you see or message the whole ministry at once, while the individual groups keep each circle manageable.

Slice across groups with filters and audiences

To view people across several groups and teams at the same time, use the People directory and the audience builder instead of nesting:

Go to the People area in your dashboard.
Open the filters and combine the groups, teams, or tags you care about. You can ask for people who are in any of several groups, or in one group but not another.
Save the result as a group of people (a saved audience) if you will reuse it, so you do not have to rebuild the filter each time.

This gives you the cross-cutting views that nesting is often used for, without waiting for a hierarchy feature.

Good to know

Every group and team you create is independent. Adding someone to one group never adds them to another.
The groundwork for nesting still exists quietly behind the scenes, so this feature may return in a future update. Until it does, there is no admin setting to turn it on yourself.
If a hierarchy is important to your church, let the team know through support. It helps prioritize the feature.
