Creating a Saved Audience
An audience is a saved group of people that keeps itself up to date. Instead of picking names by hand, you set the rules once, and anyone who starts or stops matching those rules moves in or out of the group automatically.
Before you begin
- You need the Admin role, or access to the People area.
- It helps to have the tags, groups, or teams you want to filter by already set up, so you can pick them as you build.
Step-by-step
- Go to People. Open the People page from the main menu.
- Open the Audiences tab. Along the row of tabs (All, Tags, Groups, Teams, Households, Audiences), click Audiences.
- Click New audience. You will find this button in the top-right of the list. If you have not made any audiences yet, click the New audience button in the middle of the empty page instead. Either one opens the builder.
- Name your audience. In the Name field, type a short, clear name such as "Active Volunteers", "Young Adults", or "New Visitors". You can also add a Description (marked optional) to remind yourself and your team what the group is for.
- Pick your first criterion. Under Filters, a blank filter row is already waiting for you with its menu open. Choose what to filter by from the Select criteria... menu, for example a group, a tag, a person's status, or event attendance.
- Choose an operator and a value. After you pick a criterion, choose how to match it (such as is or is in), then set the value, like the specific group or option you want.
- Add more conditions if you need them. Click the + button next to your filter to add another condition. Conditions you stack this way all have to be true (this is called AND logic), so each one narrows the group further.
- Check the preview. Below the filters, a table shows who currently matches, with a people match count at the top. While Churchday recalculates, you will see Counting...; when there are more matches than fit on screen, a line reads and X more.
- Click Create audience. When you are happy with the group, click Create audience in the top-right. This button stays greyed out until you have entered a name. You will land on your new audience's page, ready to use.
Try it: women in the Young Adults group
Here is a quick example that stacks two conditions:
- For the first filter, pick Group as the criterion, choose is in, and select your Young Adults group.
- Click the + button to add a second condition.
- Pick Gender as the criterion, choose is, and select Female.
Because both conditions must be true, the preview now shows only the women in your Young Adults group. Adjust either row and the count updates on its own.
Good to know
- Your audience is dynamic. As people join a group, change their gender, or check in to events, they move in and out of the audience automatically, so you never have to rebuild it.
- The preview shows a sample of matching people, not the full list. The and X more line tells you how many others are included.
- To match people in one group OR another, or to leave certain people out, use OR group and Exclude. See the article below on combining filters.
