Using Filters and AND/OR Logic

The audience builder supports two kinds of logic for combining filters, giving you precise control over who is included.

AND logic (within a group)

When you add multiple conditions in the same filter group, all of them must be true. This narrows your results.

Example: "Group is Young Adults" AND "Gender is Female" — finds women in Young Adults.

OR logic (between groups)

Click + Or match another set of conditions to add a second filter group. A person matches if they fit either group. This expands your results.

Example:

  • Group 1: "Group is Young Adults"
  • Group 2: "Group is College Ministry"

This finds everyone who is in Young Adults OR College Ministry (or both).

Exclude filters

Below the main filters, you can add exclude conditions. These remove people who match, even if they fit the include filters above.

Example:

  • Include: "Group is Young Adults"
  • Exclude: "Tag is Already Registered"

This finds everyone in Young Adults who does not have the "Already Registered" tag.

Step-by-step

  1. Open the audience builder from the People page or an email campaign.
  2. Add your first conditions using + Add condition. These form your first group with AND logic.
  3. To add an OR group, click + Or match another set of conditions. A new group appears separated by an "OR" divider.
  4. To exclude people, scroll down and add conditions under the exclude section.
  5. Check the count at the bottom to see how many people match.

Good to know

  • You can have as many filter groups as you need.
  • Each group can have as many conditions as you need.
  • The exclude section uses AND logic — all exclude conditions must be true for someone to be removed.
  • The count updates in real time as you change filters.
