Set a person's household from their profile

Every person's profile has a Household card on the Overview tab. From there you can group someone with their family or roommates, pick who the main contact is, and remove people when things change. This keeps families connected without leaving the person's page.

Before you begin

  • You need admin or staff access to your church's People list.
  • Open the person you want to work with, then look at the Overview tab. The Household card sits just below their contact details.

When they aren't in a household yet

If the person isn't grouped with anyone, the Household card reads Not part of a household yet and shows two choices.

  1. Click New to start a fresh household. A pop-up window titled Create household appears. Type a name (for example, "Kang Family") and click Create. The person you're viewing becomes the primary contact automatically.
  2. Click Add to household instead to drop them into a household that already exists. A search box opens listing every household in your church, each with how many people it holds. Type to narrow the list, then click the household you want. They're added right away.

Reading the household card

Once someone is in a household, the card shows the household name at the top. Below it, a Lives with line lists everyone else in the group as small rounded chips.

  • Next to Lives with you'll see a short label describing the group: Single, Couple, Family · 2 kids, or Household · 4. It's a quick summary, so it stays approximate when birthdays are missing.
  • Each chip is a family member you can click to jump to their profile. A star marks the primary contact.
  • People who don't have their own account yet show as chips with a dashed outline. Hovering over one reads "Placeholder · no account yet." These are stand-in entries for family members you haven't fully added.

Choosing the primary contact

The primary contact is the household's main point of reach. To make the person you're viewing the primary:

  1. Click Make primary in the top-right of the Household card.
  2. The button changes to a Primary badge with a star. The previous primary keeps their spot in the household but loses the badge.

Removing someone from a household

To detach the person from their household, click Remove from household at the bottom of the card. They stay in your church as a person; only the family link is broken.

People reachable only through family

Some people, often children, have no email or phone of their own. On their profile, the Contact card doesn't say "No email on file." Instead it reads Contact · through their family and lists the other household members who can be reached, with the primary contact shown first.

Because their only way to be contacted is the household, you can't simply remove them. If you click Remove from household, a pop-up window explains this and offers two real choices:

  • Add an email or phone on their profile first, so they can stand on their own. (See Edit a person's profile.)
  • Delete the person from your church entirely, using the button in the pop-up window.

Pick whichever fits. Nothing is removed until you confirm.

Good to know

  • The household name is editable. Click the name at the top of the card to rename the whole group.
  • Adding someone to a household never overwrites their personal contact details. It only links them to the family.
