Review possible households from your imported people

After you import a batch of people, Churchday looks for anyone who is probably one family and offers to group them for you. You confirm every suggestion, so nothing gets grouped by accident.

Before you begin

  • You need permission to edit people in your church.
  • You need some people added already, usually from a spreadsheet file (CSV) import. Churchday builds these suggestions from your existing people.

Step-by-step

  1. Go to the People page and open the Households tab.
  2. Look for the blue banner near the top. When Churchday has suggestions, it reads "N possible households to review." If you don't see it, Churchday didn't find any likely families right now, and that's fine.
  3. Click Review on the banner. A pop-up window titled Possible households opens, with one card for each suggested family.
  4. Read each card. The card shows the suggested household name and a label:
    • Likely (in green) means these people share a mailing address or a phone number, a strong sign they live together.
    • Possible means they only share an uncommon last name, so it's more of a guess. The right side of the card says New household if Churchday would create a fresh household, or Add to existing if these people would join a household you already have.
  5. Untick anyone who doesn't belong. Each person has a checkbox. Clear the checkbox next to anyone who isn't part of this family before you group them. People who are already in the household appear greyed out and marked already in, and you can't untick them.
  6. Click Group into a household to confirm. Churchday creates the household (or adds the people to the existing one) and the card disappears. You'll see a short confirmation that the household was created or updated.
  7. Click Not a household on any card that's wrong. That suggestion is dismissed for good and won't come back.
  8. Click Done when you've worked through the cards, or close the pop-up window any time. Once you've handled everything, the pop-up shows "All done. No more households to review."

Good to know

  • Nothing is grouped until you click Group into a household. Reviewing a suggestion never changes your people on its own.
  • Very common last names are never grouped by surname alone. If a last name is shared by more than eight people in your church, such as Kim, Lee, Park, Nguyen, or Patel, Churchday won't guess a family from the name by itself. It only suggests those people when a shared address or phone number actually ties them together, so same-surname churches don't get a wall of false families.
  • Suggestions you dismiss stay gone. Clicking Not a household remembers your choice, so the same grouping won't reappear later.
  • You can always group families by hand. From any person's profile you can add or remove household members directly, which is handy when Churchday didn't spot a family.
